We are excited to announce that TALK Hong Kong has been awarded a grant from Help For Children Asia (HFCA) to support the extension and localisation of the Stewards of Children® child sexual abuse prevention training programme, developed by Darkness to Light. This partnership underscores our shared commitment to creating a safer environment for children in Hong Kong.
Both TALK Hong Kong and HFCA are dedicated to preventing child sexual abuse in Hong Kong through education and awareness, and we aim to equip adults with the essential knowledge and skills needed to reduce opportunities for harm and effectively respond to signs of abuse in our community.
In Hong Kong, approximately 12% of children experience sexual abuse before the age of 18, a deeply troubling statistic that is compounded by the fact that 96% of these cases go unreported. This underscores the urgent need for community-wide education and action to protect our children from harm. The Stewards of Children® programme is a globally recognised, evidence-informed child sexual abuse prevention training programme. It equips adults—parents, educators, caregivers, and other community members—with the knowledge and tools to take preventative measures, recognise the signs of abuse, and respond effectively. The programme focuses on empowering adults to take responsibility for protecting children, creating a ripple effect of safety and awareness throughout entire communities. TALK Hong Kong has been facilitating this training in English for 18 months and has reached 140 people through the programming. With the support of this HFCA grant, we are able to now localise this training, which will empower us to reach a larger community.
Taura Edgar, Founder of TALK Hong Kong shared, “We are both thrilled and honoured to partner with Help For Children on this vital initiative. Their support empowers us to adapt the Stewards of Children® programme, allowing us to reach more adults in Hong Kong and significantly enhance our community’s capacity to prevent child sexual abuse.”
By localising the Stewards of Children® training for the Hong Kong community, we can ensure that the programme’s content resonates with the specific cultural, social, and linguistic nuances of the city. This means that participants will not only receive practical tools to safeguard children in their local language but will also engage with materials that reflect the realities of life in Hong Kong. Localising the programme allows us to address unique challenges faced by families and educators here, such as cultural taboos around discussing abuse, language barriers, and the diverse environments in which children grow up.
The impact of this initiative is transformative. By creating a community that is vigilant, informed, and proactive, we can significantly reduce the prevalence of child sexual abuse. Parents will learn to create an aware environment where there is less opportunity for a child to be sexually abused. Educators will gain confidence in identifying subtle behavioural changes in children that may indicate distress. Community members will become advocates for child safety, breaking the silence that often surrounds abuse. Ultimately, this programme fosters a culture of prevention and protection, where every child in Hong Kong can grow up feeling safe, supported, and free from the trauma of abuse.
“Help For Children is proud to stand alongside TALK Hong Kong in this important mission. Together, we are committed to advancing child protection efforts. This grant is just the beginning of a transformative journey that will empower adults to take proactive steps in safeguarding children In Hong Kong,” said Carlyon Knight-Evans, Board Chair of Help For Children Asia: ”
Rhonda Newton, CEO of Darkness to Light also shared that “Collaborating with TALK Hong Kong and Help For Children to localise our Stewards of Children® programme is a powerful step forward. We believe that by equipping adults with knowledge tailored to their cultural context, we can create a more effective prevention strategy against child sexual abuse.”
We look forward to the journey ahead, working closely with HFC and Darkness to Light to make a lasting impact. Together, we can create a safer future for our children.

TALK Hong Kong 欣然宣佈,在 Help For Children Asia(HFCA)的資助下,將 Darkness to Light 所設計之 Stewards of Children® 預防兒童受性侵的訓練計劃本地化,攜手為香港兒童締造更安全的成長環境。
Darkness to Light 行政總裁 Rhonda Newton 表示:「與 TALK Hong Kong 和 Help For Children 合作將我們的 Stewards of Children® 訓練計劃本地化是極其重要的一步。
